Mariene Informatie Service MARIS BV (MARIS) mission is to improve the overview of and access of data, information and knowledge about the sea. The MARIS foundation was established in 1989 and set up the MARIS company, which has been active since 1996. MARIS develops and manages projects and internet systems for management and provision of marine and ocean data.

Research expertise

MARIS is very much involved in the development and implementation of the Pan-European infrastructure for ocean and marine data. The institution is engaged in a series of EI projects in the domain of marine data management, SeaDataNet, SeaDataCloud, ENVRIFAIR, several EMODnet projects and more. MARIS has specific expertise in marine metadata and data standards and develops and operates infrastructures, web applications, mobile apps, databases, content management systems, mapping services, with support for multiple platforms.

Role in PHIDIAS

In PHIDIAS, MARIS is working in WP6 - the Ocean use - working together with Ifremer to facilitate the dataflow of marine in situ data in a FAIR way into the PHIDIAS processing environment.

Dick M.A. Schaap’s (M) expertise is in the field of ocean and marine data management. He is qualified in organising and managing European Commission projects for development and operation of international networks, databases and web interface infrastructures for management and provision of ocean & marine data. He has coordinated international projects for ocean & marine data management and manages the MARIS' organisation.

Peter Thijsse (M) coordinates web application development in the marine data domain in European projects, being an expert in marine data harmonisation and standardisation. Within MARIS he has gained extensive expertise in the development of complex data access systems, allowing users to find and retrieve data and information in an easy way.
